About Abbeville
Abbeville is Wilcox County’s seat, founded in 1857 near the Ocmulgee River. The river gives the place an older layer too: the city’s own history ties the area to Hernando de Soto’s passage through Georgia. In the 1890s, the Georgia Normal College and Business Institute brought a school story to town before moving to Douglas in 1908. Today, the First Saturday Downtown Market, the Ocmulgee, and the annual Wild Hog Festival are the local signposts. Abbeville is south-central Georgia with a courthouse backbone and a river-town edge.
