Aberdeen, ID

Aberdeen is a small Bingham County city on Idaho’s Snake River Plain, where a semi-arid landscape becomes farm country through canals and irrigation. The town took its name from Aberdeen, Scotland, and Aberdeen had 1,756 residents in 2020. The Aberdeen-Springfield irrigation tract opened to settlers in 1905, drawing Mennonite farmers who helped build canals, establish farms, and organize the first local institutions. Aberdeen Public Schools serve the community from elementary through high school. That water story is still the best way to understand Aberdeen. Ditches and fields sit alongside town streets, and the canal company remains part of the working landscape.

Early settlers built homes, a church, schools, businesses, and a hospital in the surrounding area, turning an open stretch of the plain into a community with its own routines. Today Aberdeen is a compact farm city whose local map runs through irrigation, school grounds, small businesses, and the roads connecting it with the rest of eastern Idaho.
