Abington, IN

Abington lies in Wayne County's Abington Township, an unincorporated community whose town plat predates the township around it. John Cox acquired the land in 1805, his son Joseph and John laid out the town, and the plat was recorded on December 5, 1817. A post office opened in 1824 and remained until 1903. The name recalls the Abington Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends in Pennsylvania, fitting the settlement's Quaker beginnings and the east-central Indiana landscape around it.

Abington's older shape still reads through the crossroads, Locust Grove Cemetery, and the farms and creeks of the township. Elkhorn Creek and Locust Creek run through the surrounding country, while U.S. Route 27 provides the main regional connection. The post office is gone, but the place-name remains in the township, the cemetery, and the scattered homes around the original village plat. Abington feels like an early Indiana settlement that never needed a large footprint to leave a clear mark on Wayne County.
