Accokeek, MD

Route 210 runs right through Accokeek, dividing the community into two distinct areas. Toward the river on the northwest side, you will find thousands of acres of protected woodland, farm plots, and spacious private lots. Across the highway, quiet subdivisions spread out into more traditional residential neighborhoods. With around 14,000 residents spread across a broad area, daily errands and local services center along Livingston Road, home to small shops, plant nurseries, and neighborhood churches. It is a green, open corner of Prince George's County that gives residents plenty of breathing room while keeping the commute manageable.

The area has deep roots as the ancestral home of the Piscataway people, who have lived along these waterways for thousands of years. Today, members of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe continue to call Accokeek and Southern Maryland home, carrying on traditions and maintaining a close connection to the land. You will see this heritage reflected across the community in places like Piscataway Creek, Piscataway Park, and the Moyaone Reserve. That enduring history is a major reason why so much of the local waterfront and forest remains carefully preserved today.

Much of Accokeek's wooded character is the result of a dedicated conservation effort that began a century ago. When suburban development started expanding south from Washington, local landowners came together to protect the Potomac shoreline. A major goal was preserving the natural view across the river from George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Because of those early conservation agreements, the Moyaone Reserve developed into a heavily wooded neighborhood where homes sit on large lots with strict environmental protections. Today, miles of scenic riverfront remain open for hiking, birdwatching, and enjoying the water.

Piscataway Park serves as the community's outdoor hub, featuring shoreline trails, quiet fishing spots, and a scenic boardwalk over Accokeek Creek. Inside the park, the Accokeek Foundation manages the National Colonial Farm, an educational site with heritage livestock breeds, heirloom gardens, and seasonal family programs. A short drive away, the Accokeek Branch Library on Livingston Road hosts children's storytimes, book clubs, and local events. Between paddling on the creek and taking care of daily errands near the highway, living in Accokeek offers a quiet mix of natural beauty and suburban convenience.
