Addyston, OH

Addyston is a Hamilton County village on the Ohio River, just west of Cincinnati, where the 2020 census counted 927 residents. By the 1870s the riverfront was known as Coal City because two coal elevators loaded fuel there. Canadian immigrant Matthew Addy bought riverfront land in 1889 and founded Addyston Pipe and Steel, turning the village into a company town.

Addyston incorporated in 1891, and by the early 1900s nearly 80 percent of its homes were rented by foundry workers. The pipe company became part of an 1894 cartel that later figured in the 1899 Supreme Court antitrust case Addyston Pipe & Steel Co. v. United States. The 1937 Ohio River flood devastated the village, while the foundry closed in 1950. The district's streets were built during the years when the pipe works supplied jobs, houses, and the village's daily rhythm along the river. The Village of Addyston Historic District, listed in 1991, preserves the residential streets left by that industrial era.
