Adelanto, CA

Adelanto’s first planned landscape was made up of one-acre desert farm lots rather than suburban blocks. In 1915, electric-iron inventor Earl H. Richardson sold his patent, bought land nine miles northwest of Victorville, and divided it into small holdings intended in part for World War I veterans with respiratory ailments. Fruit growing shaped the early settlement, but military aviation later became much more important to the surrounding economy. Victorville Army Air Field opened nearby in 1941, became George Air Force Base in 1950, and closed in 1992. Adelanto incorporated in 1970. The city now covers 52.87 square miles of the Victor Valley at an average elevation near 3,400 feet, giving it a broad, low-density footprint in the Mojave Desert. Across that large boundary, Adelanto reports four developed parks totaling more than thirty acres. Their combined facilities include five playgrounds, walking paths, a skatepark, basketball courts, picnic shelters, a soccer field, football field, and lighted baseball and softball diamonds.

The largest gathering venue is the Adelanto Plaza and Event Center, the former home of the High Desert Mavericks baseball club. Its 3,808-seat grandstand overlooks a professional-standard ballfield that can be converted for performances and outdoor events, and its parking area is used for farmers markets and carnivals. Transit reflects Adelanto’s connection to the rest of the Victor Valley. In July 2026, Victor Valley Transit listed Routes 31, 32, and 33 for the city; Route 31 linked residential areas, schools, and shopping with the Victor Valley Transportation Center in Victorville. That option sits within a highly dispersed regional travel pattern: Census estimates for 2020–2024 put the mean trip to work at 47 minutes.
