The community gets its name from Johann Georg Aff, a German immigrant who ran a general store and post office at the ten-mile marker along Gravois Road in the 1870s. In those days, travelers measured distances south from the downtown St. Louis courthouse, and locals gradually started calling the crossroads Aff's Town. The surrounding hills were once a patchwork of German truck farms, orchards, and country estates supplying fresh produce to the city. A prominent piece of that history survives at Oakland House, an 1853 limestone Italianate mansion whose grounds were originally planned by Missouri Botanical Garden founder Henry Shaw.
