Afton, NY

Afton is a Chenango County village along the Susquehanna River, about halfway between Binghamton and Oneonta and close to I-88. Settlement began around 1786; the village was established in 1892, and its name comes from Robert Burns's poem about Afton Water in Scotland. The river sets the valley's shape, with roads, bridge crossings, and older homes gathered along its banks. Main Street Historic District preserves late-19th-century commercial buildings, while local history also includes Ebenezer Landers's home and the Mormon House, where Joseph Smith and Emma Hale married in 1827.

Daily Afton has a practical cluster of places: Afton Central School, the Afton Free Library in the Jack Bolster Community Center, the historical society museum, Foster Park, and Afton Lake. The July Afton Fair and August arts-and-crafts show bring visitors into the village, while the golf course, stores, restaurants, churches, and health center serve residents through the rest of the year. Afton feels tied to the river and to its valley connections, but it has built a recognizable local calendar of its own. The result is a Central New York village with a Susquehanna setting, a preserved Main Street, and a school-and-community network that keeps the old crossroads lived in.
