About Afton

Afton is an Albemarle and Nelson county census-designated place in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 20 miles west of Charlottesville. The 2020 census counted 313 residents. The community sits around Afton Mountain and the rural roads that cross the mountain between the Shenandoah Valley and the Charlottesville area. Its setting is part of the Greenwood-Afton Rural Historic District, where eighteenth-century settlement, orchards, farmsteads, and later rail and road connections shaped the countryside.

Wine and craft production give Afton a modern identity. Hazy Mountain Vineyards & Brewery, Veritas Vineyard and Winery, Blue Mountain Brewery, Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery, and Silverback Distillery all operate in the surrounding community, turning the mountain foothills into a cluster of small producers. The place is still a dispersed rural CDP instead of an incorporated town, so those businesses, farms, and roads define the lived map more than a formal downtown. Afton is a Blue Ridge crossroads with a farming past and a present-day drink-and-food economy spread across two counties.
