Aguila, AZ

Aguila is a Maricopa County census-designated place on U.S. 60, about 25 miles west of Wickenburg and 22 miles northeast of Wenden. Cantaloupe fields and desert open space surround the community, while older mining and railroad history add another layer. Aguila was a stop on the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway, and the former 1907 depot now stands at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale. Even the street numbers reflect a wider connection: Aguila uses the Phoenix numbering system. The fields give the open desert a working edge.

The local center is modest but specific. Aguila Library opened in 2006 at U.S. 60 and Second Street, offering books, media, computers, and events in English and Spanish. The branch also hosts summer programs and meal service, giving the farming community a place for learning and gathering during the hottest months. Aguila is a small desert settlement where cantaloupe agriculture, a relocated depot, one highway, and a bilingual library tell the story.
