About Akeley

Set in the north woods between Park Rapids and Walker, Akeley offers a quiet, easygoing pace of life surrounded by lakes and pine forests. It started out in the late 1800s as a booming lumber town home to one of the largest sawmills in the state, but today it is a peaceful community of just a few hundred residents where daily life moves at a relaxed rhythm.

Outdoor recreation is a major draw for people settling here. The paved Heartland State Trail cuts straight through town, giving residents immediate access for biking, walking, and snowmobiling. Families are part of the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley school district, and while Akeley keeps things simple with local shops and its famous giant Paul Bunyan statue, nearby larger towns make it easy to reach grocery stores, healthcare, and lakeside dining.
