Akiachak, AK

Akiachak is a small Yup’ik village of around 700 residents located along the Kuskokwim River in southwest Alaska, just 12 miles northeast of Bethel. Daily life revolves heavily around the seasons and the water. Getting around town usually means jumping on a four-wheeler or snowmachine, while small skiffs handle summer travel and the frozen river turns into an ice road during the winter months.

Subsistence fishing and hunting are central to the community, with salmon runs and seasonal harvests shaping the rhythm of the year. The local school serves as a main gathering spot for families and also houses the district headquarters for the Yupiit School District. Because Yup’ik traditions remain strong, the school calendar accommodates traditional harvest times so kids can learn subsistence skills alongside their regular studies.
