Akiachak, AK

Akiachak is a Bethel Census Area census-designated place on the west bank of the Kuskokwim River in Alaska’s Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta. The 2020 census counted 677 residents. The Yup’ik village lies about 12 miles northeast of Bethel, with the river serving as a route for boats, fishing, and seasonal travel. Four-wheelers are part of the everyday transportation picture, and the water remains central to both work and community life. The river also sets the pace of travel through the year for everyone.

Akiachak School describes the village as a fishing and subsistence community and serves as a gathering place for local families. The Yupiit School District, which also serves Akiak and Tuluksak, has its headquarters here. Its school calendar and programs make room for traditional harvest seasons, keeping education connected to the river and the region’s Yup’ik way of life. Akiachak is a small delta settlement where school administration, salmon runs, village roads, and river travel all meet in one practical map.
