Akiak is a small, close-knit Yup'ik village set along the banks of the Kuskokwim River in western Alaska, about 40 miles northeast of Bethel. Home to roughly 460 residents, the community takes its name from the Central Yup'ik word for "the other side," referring to historic river routes in the region. Traditional culture shapes everyday life here, with families relying closely on salmon fishing, berry picking, and subsistence hunting throughout the changing seasons.

Getting around requires adapting to bush Alaska travel, as the village is completely off the road system.
