Akron, CO

Akron is Washington County's seat on the eastern Colorado prairie, founded as a railroad camp halfway between McCook and Denver and platted in 1882. U.S. 34 and State Highway 63 meet in town, and the BNSF line keeps the original through-route visible. County government shares space with agricultural work: Colorado State University Extension's Washington County office sits in the courthouse annex, with staff focused on agronomy, crop production, farm business management, and 4-H. Akron's role comes from being both a town on the rail line and the county's service center.

South of town, Akron Pond and Washington County Golf Club extend the local map beyond the courthouse. Inside town, three parks and a summer swimming pool supply regular recreation, while the Akron Museum uses five buildings to hold area history and opens on summer Sundays. The Eastern Colorado Roundup and Washington County Fair return each late July and August with exhibits, rodeos, rides, food, music, and livestock. County offices, the extension office, museum, fairgrounds, and highway junction give Akron a practical rhythm that is easy to see when the prairie roads converge on town.
