About Akron

Akron is a Plymouth County city incorporated in 1882, with a name transferred from Akron, Ohio. It sits at the northern gateway of Iowa’s Loess Hills and the Loess Hills Scenic Byway, where windblown soil rises into the long ridge system stretching south toward Missouri. The Akron–Westfield Community School District serves the local school map, including Akron–Westfield Senior High School. The city’s name may point east, but its setting points west: this is where the Iowa landscape gives way to the Loess Hills. Akron is a western Iowa city with a borrowed name and a very specific place at the byway’s northern end.
