Akron, IN

Akron occupies the crossroads of State Roads 14 and 19 in Henry Township, a position that helped turn a settlement into a town. It was first called Newark, after the Ohio home of some early settlers, then became Akron in 1855. Local history also ties the area to Dr. Joseph Sippy, who brought settlers to the meeting point of older Pottawatomie and Miami trails in 1836. The town’s Carnegie library, opened in 1915, gives that history a handsome brick address and remains one of Akron’s most recognizable civic buildings.

Life in Akron follows the pattern of a small Fulton County town surrounded by working farmland. People come into the center for library programs, errands, school and church activities, and the everyday business that keeps a crossroads town running. Rochester and Plymouth are close enough to widen the choices for shopping, health care, and work, while the roads through town still carry farm traffic and regional trips. Akron has changed names and transportation systems over time, but the basic arrangement holds: two state routes meet, a library opens its doors, and the town serves as a practical stopping point for the countryside around it.
