Alakanuk, AK

Alakanuk is a small Yup'ik village of about 750 people tucked into the maze of waterways near the mouth of the Yukon River, about 15 miles from the Bering Sea. Life here is completely off the road grid. Residents travel in and out on small planes, rely on barges for heavy cargo, and get around by boat in the summer and snowmachine in the winter. Commercial and subsistence fishing are central to the local way of life, and families are served by a single K-12 school right in town.
