Albany, IL

Albany is a Whiteside County village on the Mississippi River, laid out in 1837 by settlers who named it for Albany, New York. A post office has operated here since 1838, and the 2020 census counted 864 residents. The village sits on a bluff-and-floodplain edge where the river, roads, and farm country meet; Albany's early growth came from ferries, steamboat landings, and grain and produce moving along the river.

Albany's current connections extend beyond the village. River Bend Community Unit District 2 serves Albany, Fulton, and Garden Plain, with the high school and district center in Fulton. South of the village, Albany Mounds preserves more than 80 Middle Woodland mounds on a ridge above the Mississippi floodplain, linking the area to a much older human history. The village remains a small river settlement, with a post office, local government, and roads through the bluff country, while the school district and nearby mounds widen its regional map. Albany's strongest landmarks are the river and the long record of people using this edge of the valley.
