Albany, IN

Albany sits along the Mississinewa River across Delaware and Randolph counties, a two-county arrangement that gives the town a slightly unusual map. The 2020 census counted 2,295 residents. Andrew Kennedy settled in the area in the late 1820s, and William Venard bought land, laid out lots, and founded the village in 1833. The early town gained the pieces that make a settlement stick: a schoolhouse, a store, a church, a cemetery, and eventually a post office in 1851. The name probably nods to Albany, New York, though the town's character is Indiana river country.

Most of Albany lies in Delaware County and belongs to Delaware Community School Corporation, whose Delta High School serves the secondary grades. The river bends through the town's story, connecting it to the wider Mississinewa valley and Muncie area without turning Albany into a suburb. Local roads lead toward farm country, old settlement sites, and the small businesses around the town center. Albany has the feel of a place built in layers: pioneer lots beside a river, a county line running through its story, and school and civic routines that still give the village a recognizable center.
