Albany, WI

Albany is a Green County village on the Sugar River, with Highway 59 running through downtown and the river shaping the town’s original crossing. Before it was Albany, the place was Campbell’s Ford, settled in 1839 by James Campbell and Thomas Stewart. The village grew because the river could power mills and because surrounding farms needed a place to trade. Albany School District and the downtown main street still sit inside that river-and-road layout.

Albany’s strangest local chapter came in the 1890s, when freshwater mussels, pearls, and shells fed a button-making rush and earned the place the nickname “Pearl of the Sugar River.” Earlier mills included flour, saw, corn, and woolen operations, so the river was a working utility long before it became a scenic backdrop. Riverfest and the Sugar River State Trail keep the water at center stage today.
