Albion, CA

Albion is a Mendocino County coastal community on State Route 1, about 15 miles south of Fort Bragg, where the Albion River meets the Pacific and the road crosses the water on the Albion River Bridge. The river, bluffs, forested hills, and ocean beach give the community a distinctive shape, while the highway ties it to Mendocino, Little River, Elk, and the rest of the coast. Mendocino County designates the area as a Rural Village, a useful description for a place with a small residential center and a landscape that keeps opening outward.

School and bridge life overlap here. Albion Elementary and Mendocino Unified routes use the bridge, while Pacific Union College's Albion Field Station on the south bank of the river brings biology classes and youth programs into the community. Navarro Beach lies south, and Albion Cove, river access, and the shoreline remain part of local planning. The bridge replacement project has made that crossing a live community question, because it is also the road to school, work, services, and the coast's visitors. Albion's everyday story is river, road, and tide meeting at one narrow point.
