About Alcalde

Alcalde is a small census-designated place in Rio Arriba County, north of Espanola along the Rio Grande valley. The name is Spanish for "mayor," and the Census Bureau listed 235 residents in 2022. Here, the local map is shaped by water as much as by roads: the Acequia de Alcalde traces its community history to 1698, when irrigation was organized within the Sebastian Martin land grant. The acequia is governed through a mayordomo and commissioners, and spring cleaning brings water users together to clear the ditch before the growing season.

North of the community, Los Luceros Historic Site preserves a 148-acre Rio Grande property with a Territorial-style hacienda, nineteenth-century chapel, Victorian cottage, guesthouse, and farmyard. The site carries National Register recognition from 1983 and became a New Mexico Historic Site in 2019. Alcalde Elementary, a pre-K through sixth-grade school in the Espanola district, opened its present building in 2013. Put those pieces together and Alcalde comes into focus as a small valley community with a school, orchard country, historic ranch, and shared irrigation system doing the everyday work of holding the place together.
