About Alexandria Bay

Alexandria Bay sits on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River in Jefferson County's Thousand Islands region, near the U.S.-Canada crossing and the Thousand Islands Bridge. The village incorporated in 1878, after river transport and island tourism had begun to reshape the area. The bridge opened in 1938, and the St. Lawrence Seaway's opening in 1959 brought another working layer: large lake and ocean-going freighters pass through during navigation season. The place is a river port, border town, and seasonal tourism center at once.

Today, the waterfront is organized around village docks, Scenic View Park and walking trail, marinas, and a compact downtown of shops, restaurants, hotels, and historical sites. The village also operates water and sewer systems, police, a joint fire district, planning and zoning, and a school relationship through Alexandria Central School District. That mix gives the year a seasonal rhythm: permanent village services share the riverfront with boating, visitors, and international crossings. Alexandria Bay's strongest local clue is the way the St. Lawrence is both a working seaway and the setting for the town's commercial center.
