About Alexandria

Alexandria is the county seat of Douglas County in west-central Minnesota, set in lake country along the route between the Twin Cities and Fargo. First settled in 1858, it was named for brothers Alexander and William Kinkead of Maryland. The city's best-known local artifact is the Kensington Runestone, housed in the Runestone Museum, which gives Alexandria an unusual historical talking point. Nearby Lake Carlos State Park and the surrounding chain of lakes make the city a regional base for fishing, cabins, summer travel, and everyday services.
