Allardt, TN

Allardt is a small Fentress County city on the western Cumberland Plateau, set on a broad highland pocket surrounded by rugged hills. The town was settled by M.H. Allardt and Bruno Gernt, who brought German settlers from Michigan, and it incorporated in 1964. The 2020 census counted 555 residents. Local government has the compact shape you would expect in a town this size, with a mayor-aldermanic system and city hall on Michigan Avenue handling the ordinary municipal work.

October gives Allardt its biggest annual gathering. On the first Saturday of the month, the pumpkin festival and weigh-off brings giant vegetables, a parade, crafts, food, cars, and tractors into town. Two miles away, Colditz Cove State Natural Area adds a different landmark: the 165-acre preserve follows a loop to Northrup Falls, a waterfall over 60 feet tall named for the family that settled nearby and operated a mill in the nineteenth century. Allardt’s local rhythm comes from those two scales at once—the town’s small civic calendar and the larger plateau landscape around it. Fentress County roads lead toward the Big South Fork region, while Allardt itself remains the place where city business and the October crowd come together.
