About Allegany
The Village of Allegany sits on the north side of the Allegheny River in Cattaraugus County, with New York 417 running through Main Street. It is the governmental hub of the larger Town of Allegany, holding both village and town offices as well as the post office, library, and small Main Street businesses. The river gives the village its setting, while the route connects it with Olean to the east and Salamanca to the west. The name reaches back through several local traditions, including a story about the Allegewi people said to have lived along the river. Allegany is a village with a compact civic center and a much larger town history flowing around it.
