Alloway, NJ

Alloway is an unincorporated community and census-designated place inside Alloway Township in Salem County. The 2020 census counted 1,296 residents. The place sits along Alloway Creek in South Jersey, where an early bridge, shipyards, mills, and a glassworks helped shape the local map. The name comes from a local Native American chief, and the township's political story reaches back to a royal charter in 1767. Alloway still has the feel of a creek village rather than a separate municipality. Alloway Creek gives the place its shape, especially where the road drops toward the old village center.

The Old Alloway School on Greenwich Street was built in 1925 and later saved from demolition by local residents, giving the community a physical reminder of its schoolhouse years. Alloway Township School serves younger students, while Woodstown High handles the upper grades. With farms, creek roads, and Salem County's old industrial traces around it, Alloway is a small South Jersey place where the road names carry a lot of history.
