Alma, KS

Alma is Wabaunsee County's seat, set among Flint Hills grasslands and the stone buildings that earned it the nickname City of Native Stone. The town grew as the county formed in the 1860s, and the courthouse square still gives Alma a civic center: county offices, local businesses, and K-99, also called Missouri Street, meeting the town grid. It is the kind of place where county business, school activities, and errands across the surrounding hills overlap. Alma's population makes the geography feel bigger than the town itself; ranch country begins almost at the edge of the streets.

The school district ties Alma to McFarland, Maple Hill, and Paxico through Wabaunsee USD 329, with junior, senior, and elementary programs based in town. McKnight Park and the town's courts give residents a place to meet outside the courthouse routine. Then, on the third Saturday in August, Hot Alma Nights fills the streets with cars, visitors, and a little downtown spectacle. That contrast — weekday county-seat business, school calendars, Flint Hills drives, and one big summer cruise-in — is the local rhythm.
