Alpine, OR

Alpine is a Benton County census-designated place and unincorporated rural community west of Monroe, reached from Oregon Route 99W. The 2023 estimate put the population at 258. Its name comes from the community’s position high on a foothill of the Central Oregon Coast Range, though the surrounding country is more Willamette Valley farm road than mountain resort. Corvallis and Oregon State University lie to the east, while routes west lead toward the coast and Alsea Falls. Just west, Oregon State University operates Woodhall Vineyard, tying this rural corner to agricultural research as well as local farming.

The small settlement has an everyday center in Alpine Chapel Park, an approximately four-acre volunteer-maintained green with picnic tables, a swing set, and a shelter. The park’s name echoes the old chapel and school history of the community, where early settlers gathered around churches, schoolhouses, and local meeting places. South Benton’s volunteer network continues through the Alpine Community Center, which serves rural communities with arts, education, and local programs. Alpine is a place of valley roads and foothills, with a pocket park and a community hall doing the work a larger town center would do.
