About Alto

Alto sits across Banks and Habersham counties in northeast Georgia, up in the foothills where the town's name points to elevation. The post office first opened as Lulah in 1847, changed to Alto in 1879, and moved into Habersham County in 1906. The town incorporated in 1895, when it was a small one-square-mile place along the growing routes into the Georgia mountains. Today Alto remains a two-county town with Banks County schools on one side of the line and Habersham County connections on the other. It is a foothill community whose identity is less about a single county than the ridge-and-road country around it.
