About Alton

Alton began as Bull City in 1870, an Osborne County settlement associated with Hiram C. Bull. The post office changed the name to Alton in February 1885, a change linked to the town's women and to settlers' ties with Alton, Illinois. The city lies in the South Solomon River valley along U.S. 24, among the limestone bluffs and farm country of north-central Kansas. A long-running Easter Sunrise Pageant at the illuminated cross and the work of USD 392 give Alton present-day traditions that grow from its early townsite story.
