Amador City, CA

Tucked into the Sierra Nevada foothills, Amador City holds the title of California's smallest incorporated town, with a population of around 200 residents. It started out as a busy Gold Rush mining camp along Amador Creek in 1849, and much of that historic character is still standing today. Strolling down the street feels like stepping back into the 19th century, with preserved brick storefronts, wooden balconies, and landmark buildings like the 1870s Imperial Hotel still anchoring the community.

Daily life centers along a short stretch of Main Street on Old Highway 49. The historic storefronts now house wine tasting rooms, small shops, a beloved local bakery, and cozy spots to grab dinner. It is a quiet, walkable place where you can cross the entire town on foot in five minutes, with larger amenities and neighboring communities like Sutter Creek and Plymouth just a quick drive down the road.
