Ames, TX

Ames is a Liberty County city on U.S. 90 and Farm Road 160, about 42 miles west of Beaumont. It began as Rachal Station, named for pioneer Darius Ciriaque Rachal, then took the name of a Texas and New Orleans Railroad section foreman. The railroad had a Civil War-era flag station here and a full station by 1890. Ames voters incorporated the town in 1972, after decades as a small rail stop and voting-box community. Ames is south-central Texas with a name that changed when the railroad became the town's organizing line.
