Amherst, VA

Amherst is Amherst County's seat, a Virginia town of 2,110 residents in the 2020 census at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and about 13 miles north of Lynchburg. It began as a stagecoach stop called The Oaks or Seven Oaks and became the county seat after 1807. The courthouse, early-20th-century commercial buildings, library, museum, arts center, farmers market, and Ambriar district all sit in the town's Main Street map. Sweet Briar College lies just south and gives the town a higher-education neighbor with a large historic campus.

The county's museum and historical society keep the past close to the courthouse district, and town wayfinding links those civic destinations with Main Street and the college. Around that civic core, county-seat work is mixed with local shopping and regional employers such as Clorox, Buffalo Air, Hermle, and Greif.
