About Anacoco

Bayou Anacoco and the Anacoco Prairie give this Vernon Parish village its name. An older explanation traces it to the Spanish phrase “Llano Cuco”; the French rendered that as l’Anacoco, and English speakers later dropped the article. Anacoco sits within a parish whose wider work map includes the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Johnson, and it is one of Vernon Parish’s six incorporated communities alongside Leesville, Hornbeck, New Llano, Rosepine, and Simpson.

South Toledo Bend State Park gives Anacoco its clearest physical reference. The park’s address is 120 Bald Eagle Road, and its grounds occupy small bluffs over the Toledo Bend Reservoir. A boat ramp, observation deck, 3,000-foot surfaced nature trail, campsites, cabins, and picnic areas organize the visitor side of the local map. The reservoir supports bass-fishing tournaments and other fishing, while the park’s bald-eagle nesting habitat, hiking, cycling, birding, and wildlife viewing keep the waterfront in regular use. Anacoco reads as a parish village tied to a named bayou, a military region, and a state-park shoreline.
