Anaktuvuk Pass, AK

Tucked high in the central Brooks Range, Anaktuvuk Pass is an isolated mountain village surrounded by the wild landscapes of Gates of the Arctic National Park. Since there are no roads connecting the community to the rest of the state, small flights from Fairbanks serve as the primary lifeline for travel and supplies. Winters are long, cold, and windy, and the expansive tundra and mountain valleys shape everyday life. It is the home of the Nunamiut Iñupiat, who established the modern settlement in 1949 and maintain a deep connection to the surrounding land.

With roughly 425 residents, the village is small, quiet, and close-knit. Essential services cover the basics, including the Nunamiut School, a local health clinic, a post office, and a general store, while the Simon Paneak Memorial Museum highlights the area's rich heritage. Subsistence caribou hunting remains central to the community's way of life throughout the year. Living here means adapting to a self-reliant lifestyle, respecting local customs, and being prepared for remote Arctic conditions.
