Angostura, SD

Angostura is a Fall River County census-designated place on the shore of Angostura Reservoir in southwestern South Dakota. U.S. 18 and U.S. 385 run through the wider area, with Hot Springs about eleven miles northwest and Oelrichs farther southeast. Residential development is concentrated in Angostura Heights, while the reservoir and its shoreline form the main geographic feature. The name comes from the Spanish word for "narrows," fitting a community defined by the Cheyenne River valley and a dammed waterway at the southeastern edge of the Black Hills.

Angostura Dam was built across the Cheyenne River in 1949 for irrigation, creating a reservoir with roughly 4,400 acres of water and more than forty miles of shoreline. The state's Angostura Recreation Area occupies the shore with campgrounds, boat ramps, fishing access, beaches, and trails. Hot Springs School District 23-2 serves the community. Angostura's map is a mix of reservoir homes, state recreation land, open ranch country, and the roads leading back to Hot Springs and the Black Hills.
