Aniak, AK

Located along the Kuskokwim River in southwestern Alaska, Aniak is a small community of about 500 residents that functions as a travel and service hub for the middle Kuskokwim region. Like most towns in the area, it is off the road system, so getting in and out relies on regular flights through Bethel or Anchorage. The town grew around the spot where the Aniak River meets the Kuskokwim, taking its name from the Yup'ik phrase for "the place where it comes out."

Daily life here follows the seasons and the river. Summer brings families onto the water to fish for salmon, while winter freezes the waterways into snowmachine routes that connect neighboring villages. As the headquarters for the Kuspuk School District, Aniak has schools, health services, and local stores that support both residents and surrounding settlements, offering a quiet rural lifestyle with strong community ties.
