Aniak, AK

Aniak is a city on the south bank of the Kuskokwim River at the head of Aniak Slough, 92 air miles northeast of Bethel in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The 2020 census counted 507 residents. Its Yup'ik name means the place where it comes out, referring to the mouth of the Aniak River. A 1914 homestead brought a store and post office to the current site; a territorial school opened in 1936, and the airfield and White Alice relay station later made Aniak a communications and travel point for the middle Kuskokwim.

The river still sets the local rhythm. The Aniak River joins the Kuskokwim just upstream from town, and salmon runs support fishing that connects work, food, and summer gatherings. Air travel, river travel, and the airport's facilities are part of the same practical network. Kuspuk School District operates Auntie Mary Nicoli Elementary and Aniak Jr./Sr. High School in town, serving as a regional school hub as well as a daily gathering point. Aniak is a small city where Yup'ik history, river travel, subsistence, school life, and long-distance connections all share one floodplain.
