About Anita

Anita was platted in 1869 and incorporated in 1875 in Cass County, a small town whose map changed again when Lake Anita State Park was built just outside town in the 1960s. The park’s 171-acre lake and 1,062-acre grounds turned a nearby farm landscape into a regional recreation spot. A paved Grass Roots Trail now connects downtown Anita with the park, making the lake part of the town’s everyday edge instead of a separate destination.

Fishing, boating, camping, prairie trails, and shoreline picnics shape the warm-weather calendar, while Anita’s streets, businesses, churches, and school connections serve the year-round population. The city sits in southwest Iowa farm country, with Atlantic and other Cass County communities supplying larger shopping, health care, and employment options. Anita also carries the memory of the June 1953 F5 tornado that struck east of town and killed one person. The place has a practical, outdoorsy rhythm: local errands in town, then a short walk or drive to the lake.
