Annawan, IL

Annawan is an incorporated town in Henry and Bureau counties, named either for a Massachusetts Wampanoag chief or, by another local tradition, for a Winnebago leader. The 2020 census counted 1,143 residents. The community grew after Daniel Morton built the first log cabin in 1846, with Mud Creek west of town and the Green River shaping the broader landscape. Illinois Route 78 leads south to Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area, about five minutes away.

The state recreation area covers 1,365 acres around a 58-acre lake, with fishing, boating, woodland, grassland, and a smaller pond. Closer to town, Howes Park hosts Annawan-Wethersfield Titans baseball, giving the community a local field as well as a regional outdoor destination. Annawan Community Unit School District 226 ties the town to surrounding farm country and nearby school communities. The result is an Illinois town organized by two kinds of routes: the everyday streets and school connections inside town, and Route 78 leading to the lake, prairie, and recreation grounds just south.
