Antlers, OK

Antlers is the Pushmataha County seat in the Kiamichi River Valley, where the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway laid out a station in 1886–87. The name comes from a spring marked by deer antlers, a story that gives the city its oddest and most memorable landmark. The railroad brought a depot, a post office, stores, and sawmills, while the valley supported cotton gins, farms, and lumber work. Antlers also grew inside the former Choctaw Nation, and that history matters to the town’s map and memory. The old Frisco depot now houses the Pushmataha County Historical Museum, keeping the railroad-era center tied to the county seat it helped create.
