Antwerp, NY

Antwerp is a village in northeastern Jefferson County, where the Indian River runs through the center and Fort Drum borders the village. It was incorporated in 1853 and has about 680 residents. The settlement began as Indian River around an early river crossing and mill site; the river was dammed for industry in 1805, and the village grew around waterpower, roads, and later rail. Main Street still drops toward the river, carrying the commercial core across a stone arch bridge and past the ruins of the early mills.

Antwerp’s historic district gathers most of the built-up village: nineteenth-century commercial blocks, homes, churches, Town Hall, Crosby Memorial Library, cemeteries, and a memorial park. Fires in 1867 and 1889 reshaped the Main Street storefronts, leaving brick and stone buildings beside the river crossing. The village runs its own water and sewage plants, garbage and recycling pickup, and volunteer fire service; children attend Indian River Central School. Antwerp’s civic services and preserved commercial streets still occupy the same river-centered village that drew settlers two centuries ago.
