Apollo, PA

Apollo is an Armstrong County borough on the Kiskiminetas River, about thirty-five miles northeast of Pittsburgh in the old coal and canal country. Settled in 1790, laid out in 1816, and incorporated in 1848, the borough grew where river transport, mills, rail, and hillside mining routes met. Main Street and riverfront streets still lead toward the water, while the surrounding Kiski Valley rises into wooded ridges.

Apollo's outdoor life reaches upriver to Roaring Run Recreation Area, where the Roaring Run Trail follows the Kiski River for five miles and passes remnants of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal. The Apollo Kiski River Trail ties that recreation area back to town, and the first public library in Armstrong County opened here in 1911. The river remains close by. Apollo-Ridge schools, borough services, river access, and trail users give the small center a steady rhythm.
