Appleton, MN

Appleton is a Swift County city on the Pomme de Terre River, laid out in 1872 and given a post office the following year. The river runs through town toward Marsh Lake and the Minnesota River, giving the city a water corridor within the flat west-central Minnesota landscape. Appleton belongs to Lac qui Parle Valley School District. It also carries an unusual industrial footprint: the Prairie Correctional Facility is vacant, while a plant-protein factory operated by Eat Just has connected the town to a newer food-processing economy. The 2020 census counted 1,392 residents.

Appleton’s parks keep the river visible in present-day routines. Riverview Park, the municipal campground, and the restored WPA-era bathhouse sit along the Pomme de Terre, with trails linking the riverfront and camping areas. The city also hosts an off-highway vehicle park in the surrounding Swift County recreation network, while local historic buildings and the Swift County Historical Museum hold the older county story nearby. Appleton is a place where a nineteenth-century river settlement now carries several different systems at once: schools, water, historic buildings, a vacant correctional complex, and newer food production.
