Aragon, GA

Aragon is a Polk County city of 1,440 residents in the 2020 census, a north Georgia mill town built around the Aragon Mill. The mill was built and chartered in 1898 and became one of the largest in Georgia; the city grew around that industrial base. The name comes from local aragonite deposits, and a post office has served the community since 1899. The old mill is closed now, so the city's most important story is the handoff from factory town to small municipality.

The mill pond and museum make the old industrial footprint easy to find. Current community life still gathers around that history. The city holds its annual BBQ, schedules Kids Day at Aragon Mill Pond, and hosts a historical society that meets at the museum. City Hall, mayor-and-council government, trash service, and local departments supply the day-to-day municipal framework. Aragon is a compact Polk County place where a former mill, a mill pond, and recurring civic events keep the industrial past in view.
