About Arcanum
Arcanum is a village in Darke County, set in Ohio's farm belt between Dayton and the Indiana line. The village was laid out in 1849, and the Greenville and Miami Railroad arrived in 1852, linking the new settlement with Dayton and the wider region. The 2020 census counted 2,457 residents. State Route 49 serves the village, while Interstate 70 and Interstate 75 sit within the broader road network. Agriculture still gives the surrounding countryside its main pattern.
Arcanum's downtown and civic map grew from that rail connection. The village government, schools, churches, and local businesses fit a small center surrounded by working fields. Arcanum's location gives it a useful mix of old and current routes: the railroad established its first regional link, and the highways now carry the through traffic. The old rail line's path is still part of how residents read the village. It is a compact Darke County village whose name, grid, and local institutions all grew from the same nineteenth-century crossroads.
