Arcata turns a municipal utility into a public landscape used for recreation and wildlife observation. The 307-acre Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary combines the city's wastewater-treatment system with freshwater and salt marshes, tidal sloughs, mudflats, an interpretive center, and roughly five miles of walking and bicycling paths. Located on the Pacific Flyway, it has recorded more than 300 bird species and hosts free guided walks throughout the year. On the city's eastern side, the 2,350-acre Community Forest supplies a very different everyday setting: second-growth redwoods, a 19-mile network of recreational roads and trails, and access for walking, running, bicycling, horseback riding, nature study, and picnicking. The completed 4.5-mile Arcata Ridge Trail links the main forest with the Sunny Brae tract across the city's north-south span. Cal Poly Humboldt, founded in 1913 and now California's third polytechnic university, shapes Arcata's academic life with 61 undergraduate majors and 13 master's programs, including substantial offerings in natural resources, environmental science, engineering, arts, and professional fields.

Downtown, the Plaza remains the recurring venue for a farmers' market in every month and events such as the Kinetic Grand Championship, Oyster Festival, summer concerts, and North Country Fair. Arcata & Mad River buses run several city routes on weekdays and limited Saturday service; the Green and Gold loop serves downtown, the university, Valley West Shopping Center, and Alliance Road while classes are in session. Arcata had 18,857 residents in the 2020 census and an estimated 18,748 in July 2024. Only 36 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied in 2020-2024; the median owner value was $484,600, monthly mortgage costs were $2,214, and median gross rent was $1,327. Cal Poly also acknowledges that its campus occupies unceded Wiyot land, a present-day connection to the people who have lived in the region from time immemorial.
