Arendtsville, PA

Arendtsville is an Adams County borough on Pennsylvania Route 234 near South Mountain, in the middle of the county's apple country. It was settled in 1810 as John's Pursuit, took the Arendtsville name from early settler John Arendt, and received a post office in 1841. The borough is small, but its location puts it next to the South Mountain Fairgrounds and the roads through the Adams County fruit belt.

Apples are the local calendar. The National Apple Harvest Festival takes over the fairgrounds each fall, while the National Apple Museum in nearby Biglerville keeps the region's orchard history in view year-round. Upper Adams School District serves the borough, and the community's roads connect it to Bendersville, Biglerville, and the Gettysburg area. Arendtsville is a good example of a place whose identity is less about a big downtown and more about the crop, the mountain edge, the fairground, and the names repeated on orchard roads. That rhythm is the local shorthand.
