Tucked into southeastern Winston County, Arley is a quiet rural community bordered by the William B. Bankhead National Forest and the clear waters of Lewis Smith Lake. With a population of around 500 residents, it offers a peaceful, small-town pace where neighbors quickly get to know one another. The settlement dates back to the 1830s and was originally known by the peculiar name of Dismal. That changed in the early 1900s when a new post office opened near Arley School, named after the founder's son, Robert Arley Gibson, giving the town the name it carries today.
