About Arnold Line
Arnold Line is a Lamar County census-designated place pressed against Hattiesburg on the north, east, and south. The name comes from the railroad branch that once served John Thomas Arnold's sawmill, a reminder that this part of southeastern Mississippi grew around timber and rail. Today the community sits inside the Hattiesburg metropolitan area while remaining an unincorporated county address. Lamar County School District serves Arnold Line, and Hattiesburg is about five miles east at the city center. That arrangement makes Arnold Line easy to understand geographically: county neighborhoods on three sides of the Hattiesburg boundary, a larger city close by, and an old railroad name surviving in the modern map. Arnold Line is a small Mississippi place where the sawmill past and the Hattiesburg present occupy the same edge.
